Where Lepcha’s Live
Lepchajagat is a small village and a hill station in West Bengal. Situated at an altitude of 2123 m above sea level, it lies close to Darjeeling, about 20 km away from it.
Earlier a quiet settlement of the Lepcha tribe, it became well known after the British expedition into the region. Now, a popular tourist spot, Lepchajagat is famous for views of Mount Kanchenjunga and the surrounding Himalayas from amidst hilly forests of rhododendron, pine and oak.
Sunrise and sunset from behind the Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling illuminated at night are some of the picturesque views afforded at Lepchajagat. It is also located close to other hill stations of the region such as Kurseong, Kalimpong and Tiger Hill.
Lepchajagat is closest to Darjeeling. From Darjeeling, one can take a shared jeep to the hill station. The nearest railway station is at New Jalpaiguri, about 85 km away. The closest airport is the Bagdogra Airport, about 80 km away. The best time to visit Lepchajagat is during winter.
There is a Forest Bungalow of West Bengal Forest Department where you have to book for your night stay prior to your visit. The rooms are very big in respect to rates taken for the rooms. Food quality was good but service of the caretakers were not to the mark. Availability of caretakers in odd hours was also an issue. Sometimes it might make you feel that you are in the middle of nowhere with no one is around you.
Location wise the rest house is awesome. You can easily spend one night at the rest house.
From Lepchajagat there is a small town called Sukhiapokhri, which is about 4 km away. Sukhiapokhri is near Nepal's eastern border with India. From Sukhiapokhri one can go to different tea gardens and other small towns or villages in the area. There are several towns/villages on the India-Nepal border – Manebhanjang, Simana, etc.
Tiger Hill is located in West Bengal and is the summit of Ghoom. From Lepchajagat, Tiger Hill is located at a distance of about 12 km. It takes 45 minutes to reach Tiger Hill from Lepchajagat. The first rays of the sun shoot ahead and shed light on the twin peaks of Mt Kanchenjunga painting it pink and then bathing it in a beautiful orange colour.
If you have plans for a trip to Darjeeling or Mirik, I would suggest for inclusion of Lepchajagat in the trip. So plan your trip accordingly and pack your bags.
